National Consumer Protection Week for 2025 ran from March 2nd through March 8th. The National Consumer Protection Week focused on helping consumers understand their rights in hopes of preventing different types of potential scams. More specifically, as noted during this week, to protect a consumer from potential threats it is imperative that consumers stay informed and take advantage of all the resources available online[1].
Firstly, consumers must know their rights before entering any binding agreement. More specifically, if an agreement is not fully understood a consumer can be easily taken advantage of and will be unable to leave the agreement without financial repercussions. To better understand the many nuances the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Compliance Division[2] offers information on how to interpret complex documents.
During National Consumer Protection Week, businesses discussed the preventive measures to protect a person’s personal information from identify theft. The best way to protect yourself against theft is to create unique passwords that cannot be hacked by others. Also, once a person suspects that their identity has been stolen it is important to immediately report the fraudulent charge to both your bank and credit card company.
Lastly, before buying a product, a consumer should read the reviews and understand the return policies. If a consumer needs to file a complaint against a company this can be processed through the Better Business Bureau[3]. Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau offers other resources.
Overall, this year, the National Consumer Protection Week provided consumers with the resources to know when and where to seek help as discussed in numerous webinars that were held by both government agencies and businesses.
