New York State has announced a $30 million expansion of its Drive Clean Rebate Program[1] to help consumers save on the purchase of electric vehicles. Alongside the rebate boost, New York has made changes to its Charge Ready NY 2.0 initiative to make public charging more accessible across the state. Governor Kathy Hochul recently stated[2] that “along with increased savings, we are building out the infrastructure needed to provide hard-working New Yorkers convenient access to charging, helping to reduce range anxiety and make it easier to drive electric. These investments are key to building a cleaner future, lowering emissions and creating good-paying jobs.”
The Drive Clean Rebate Program:
The Drive Clean Rebate offers point-of-sale savings between $500 and $2,000 for the purchase of over 60 qualifying EV models. Rebate amounts are based on the vehicle’s electric range and price:
- $500 rebate for EVs with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price over $42,000 or less than 40 miles of electric range
- $1,000 rebate for vehicles with a range of 40–199 miles
- $2,000 rebate for vehicles offering 200 miles or more of electric range
Changes to Charge Ready NY 2.0:
New York is expanding Charge Ready NY 2.0[3], a program that incentivizes the installation of electric vehicle charging stations. This includes:
- Rebates for charging port installations are increasing from $2,000 to $3,000 per port.
- Sites in disadvantaged communities are eligible for an extra $1,000 per port.
- Additional incentives may be available for infrastructure that promotes public access and broader electric vehicle use.
- Rebates for chargers used only by individuals or fleets are capped at $1,000 per port.
Increased Support for Community Engagement:
New York State is also investing $3 million to NYSERDA to support sites that offer free electric vehicle charging, “ride and drive” community events to promote electric vehicle awareness, and organizations that purchase or lease electric vehicles. Doreen Harris, NYSERDA president and CEO, stated that “converting to EVs reduces the total cost of vehicle ownership through lower fuel and vehicle maintenance costs. The State is ensuring that more new and existing drivers have a variety of options to power up their vehicle at easy-to-access locations for longer periods of time.”
Based on this new funding, New York is solidifying its leadership in clean transportation and making electric vehicles more accessible for everyone.
