Data centers are becoming increasingly important to the digital economy, supporting services such as cloud computing, streaming, and artificial intelligence. As these technologies continue to expand, they are also driving significant growth in electricity demand. Data centers operate continuously and require an uninterrupted supply of electricity to keep their systems running[1].

That demand is putting additional pressure on an electric grid already facing aging infrastructure, extreme weather, rising electricity use, and the transition to renewable energy. Utilities must connect large new customers like data centers while maintaining reliability for everyone else. As electricity demand grows, an important question emerges. Can the traditional grid keep pace with the needs of data centers?

One potential answer is localized power generation, or distributed generation. Rather than relying entirely on large power plants and long-distance transmission, localized systems generate or store electricity closer to where it is needed[2]. For data centers, this could include solar, battery storage, fuel cells, microturbines, and advanced energy management systems. Local generation and battery storage can provide an additional layer of protection, helping meet demand during normal operations and providing backup power during outages or extreme weather. These resources can also potentially support the broader grid during periods of high demand.

The benefits can extend beyond data centers. Microgrids can allow groups of facilities to operate together and, when necessary, disconnect from the larger grid. Hospitals, manufacturers, universities, and communities could use similar systems to improve reliability and resilience. Overall, the growth of data centers highlights the increasingly important connection between technology and energy infrastructure. As the digital economy becomes more electricity-intensive, utilities, regulators, and large customers may need to look beyond traditional generation and transmission and consider a combination of localized resources.
